Most readers agree with Auburn University campus-wide smoking ban

Auburn University announced Thursday it is banning smoking on all campus properties beginning Aug. 21.

And most readers responding to an AL.com online poll say they agree with the decision.

With 597 responses as of midnight, 62 percent supported the move to go smoke free.

Just 37 percent said they did not.

The ban prohibits students, faculty, staff, contractors and visitors from smoking on any university property, including in university-owned vehicles and properties leased or managed by the school.

It exempts smokeless tobacco such as chewing tobacco and smoking in private vehicles, though it includes new electronic cigarettes.

It will also include Auburn's Jordan-Hare Stadium, which presently features a designated smoking area.

However, Eric Smith, director of Health Promotion and Wellness Services in Auburn's Department of Student Affairs, said the ban will be phased in gradually for athletic events over a couple years.

The ban comes after Auburn University banned smoking within 25 feet of any university building a year ago.

Click here for details on the ban or to respond to the poll, which remains open.

Obama, GOP offer differing visions on immigration

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is using his presidential pulpit to press the Republican-controlled House to embrace a path to citizenship for all 11 million people living illegally in the U.S., while a top Republican says those brought to America as children should be given the highest priority for legalization.

With prospects shaky for passing an immigration overhaul in the House, the White House insisted Monday that to garner Obama's signature, any bill must satisfy the president's principles ? the path to citizenship chief among them. But Obama is leaving the particulars of how Congress gets there up to lawmakers, wary of strong-arming the process and handling Republicans an excuse to vote no.

"I cannot even begin to count the number of possibilities that could emerge through the House process. So I'm not going to," said White House spokesman Jay Carney. "What I'm saying is that the end result has to meet the president's principles if he's going to sign it into law."

He said Obama would voice those principles and the benefits of fixing immigration Tuesday in interviews with Spanish-language TV stations.

If the White House had its way, the House would simply and swiftly take up a sweeping Senate bill that passed with bipartisan support. But House Speaker John Boehner has already rejected that notion, preferring to tackle the nation's immigration laws in "bite-sized chunks."

Boehner's approach reflects the intense skepticism of the GOP rank-and-file, who say they don't trust Obama will fulfill border-security requirements in the Senate-passed bill. Although Republicans generally acknowledge they must broaden their appeal to Hispanic voters whose influence in elections is rapidly growing, many say they fear primary challenges from the right if they support a new path to citizenship.

One exception that could gain traction among Republicans would be to offer a citizenship path only to those brought here as children. Allowing only those individuals to obtain citizenship could shield Republicans from attacks by conservatives that they're giving a free pass to those who voluntarily broke the law.

"I think that group of people ? some call DREAMers ? is a group that deserves perhaps the highest priority attention," Rep. Bob Goodlatte, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, said at an immigration-related conference in California. "They know no other country."

Goodlatte and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, both Virginia Republicans, are working on a bill to address the status of those immigrants, although the timing is uncertain. And Goodlatte cautioned that any such measure should hinge on completion of enforcement measures to prevent parents from smuggling their children into the U.S. in the future.

Obama has kept his distance from the back-and-forth in Congress, knowing that the political imperative for Republicans will likely be more persuasive than any pressure he applies ? and that aligning himself too closely to any legislation could actually make it harder to attract GOP support.

Still, with a major component of his legacy on the line, Obama is ratcheting up his efforts to make clear to Republicans that without meaningful action on immigration, Republicans will be hard-pressed in future elections to peel Hispanic support away from Democrats. More than 70 percent of Hispanics backed Obama in his re-election last year.

From the grounds of the White House, Obama will take to the airwaves Tuesday of Spanish-language TV stations in Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles and New York. The White House said Obama will argue that immigration reform is in line with the nation's values and in the country's economic interests.

Indiana Makes It Illegal For Clergy To Perform Gay Wedding Ceremony

http://www.alternet.org/news-amp-pol...tter867164&t=3

July 10, 2013 |

On July 1 of next year, same-sex couples applying for a marriage license in Indiana will have committed a felony punishable by 18 months in prison an a $10,000 fine. The new crime stems from the revival of a1997 law forbidding false information on a marriage license as a Class D felony. It will also make it a Class B misdemeanor -- punishable by up to 180 days in a jail and a maximum fine of $1,000 -- for clergy, judges, and others to perform a same-sex marriage.

The New Civil Rights Movement explains how the new rule works:

Because Indiana marriage license forms have a space for ?male applicant? and ?female applicant?, any same-sex couple filling out the form would automatically violate the law. The harsh penalties Indiana lawmakers have approved make it difficult for protest movements like the Campaign for Southern Equality?s ? We Do? Campaign, which encourages same-sex couples to apply for marriage licenses as a protest in states that prohibit same-sex marriages.

Same-sex marriage is already illegal in Indiana, but legislators are contemplating adding a ban in an amendment the state's Constitution. The vote will be held in the January-March 2014 legislative session.

What happened to freedom of religion? They are making it a felony for willing churches and ministers to officiate a marriage ceremony for gay couples.

This is an outrageous over reach of the state. This further goes to show that these idiotic bigots care nothing for the peoples freedom of religion. This is simply a campaign of hate and intolerance. Nothing more nothing less. They are attempting to quell the peoples protest and going far further this time, they are marching right into the churches and dictating what they can and can not do, banning churches from holding religious ceremonies.

Galaxy Note 3 vs. HTC One MAX pre-launch user mindset

When Samsung released the Galaxy Note range back in 2011, they had a new device on their hands that would prove very popular, and as such it was obvious that they would update this with the Note 2 the following year. Well, it?s almost two years and now we?re expecting an announcement for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 release in September, but they might have some unexpected competition.

The Taiwanese phone maker has not made any such announcement, but there is a rumor doing the rounds that there could be a HTC One MAX release and if true will target the Galaxy Note 3, just as the HTC One has targeted the Galaxy S4 and the One Mini will take on the S4 Mini.

HTC is not like Apple, they do not bury their head in the sand and forget about what a user wants, and this is a smartphone with different sizes. They already have the middle of the display size covered, and will also fulfill the smaller display segment, so why not the phablet?

If this were to be released, the HTC One MAX would certainly give the Note 3 a run for its money, just as we suspect the Sony Ultra will do as well. Just imagine having an oversized HTC One, it will look a far better device than the Note 3, which we expect will be very similar to the current Note.

For the most part, the pre-launch user mindset for the HTC One MAX is a positive one, but not for all, as you will see in this Google+ discussion page, where some people are worried about having a phone of this size without the ability to change the battery. However, the other issue is that some of you out there fear that HTC is putting too many eggs in one basket, meaning they are trying to do far too much with a single model.

Having said that, you have to admire the HTC approach, as they have simplified their range, unlike Samsung, which as you know is very confusing indeed.

At the end of the day, if HTC were to follow what Samsung has done and will bring yet another new version of a popular device to market, then it will only benefit you and I, as we have a far greater choice.

Eliot Spitzer, Anthony Weiner stage political comebacks. Redemption overload?

Not long ago New York Democrats Eliot Spitzer and Anthony Weiner seemed to have killed their political careers with sex scandals. Now, each is attempting a comeback, but will New Yorkers forgive and forget?

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / July 13, 2013

Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer with host Jay Leno during a taping of "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," Friday, July 12, 2013, in Burbank, Calif. Spitzer, who resigned as governor in 2008 amid a prostitution scandal, is now running for New York City comptroller.

It wasn?t long ago that Elliot Spitzer and Anthony Weiner ? the former governor and the former congressman ? had reason to hang their heads in shame, not only for their personal failings but because their ambitions to advance politically seemed dashed.

Mr. Spitzer, a married man, was found to have purchased the service of high-priced prostitutes. Mr. Weiner had sent lewd photos of himself to women (other than his wife) who he had flirted with on the Internet.

Now, each feels ready to reenter the world of electoral politics. Spitzer is running for New York City comptroller, Weiner for mayor of New York. The state?s primary election is in September.

In the mayor?s race, Weiner has pushed to the lead among a group of Democratic contenders. He edges New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn 25-20 percentage points among registered Democrats in the latest Marist Poll with the rest of the hopefuls trailing off.

?The Weiner candidacy has scrambled the contest,? says Lee Miringoff, director of The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion. ?But, nearly one in five Democrats are undecided, and almost two-thirds are not firmly committed to a candidate which makes for a lot of persuadable voters.?

Most of Weiner?s former colleagues in the House of Representatives have rejected his request for endorsement.

"I don't think he's one of the most qualified candidates and I think his record is not such that we ought to be considering him for mayor," Rep. Jerrold Nadler, (D) of New York, said on C-SPAN. "He's entitled to run. I wish he hadn't."

On the PBS Newshour Friday night, anchor Judy Woodruff asked New York Times columnist David Brooks and syndicated columnist Mark Shields whether Spitzer and Weiner had the right to try and make a political comeback.

?Yes, but my rule is start at the bottom,? said Mr. Brooks. ?So, I am little more pro-Spitzer.?

?If you are going to have a fall from grace, start at the bottom and work your way back up,? Brooks said. ?Show you care about the service, rather than just rebuilding your reputation.?

?Don?t confuse the two,? cautioned Mr. Shields.

Keepin' It Real: Villanova Football in 2013

Brian and Chris took some time out of their weekend to discuss what to expect from Villanova football in 2013.

CHRIS: I'm sure you saw my initial post where I talked about how I would rate the vaunted Villanova rushing attack if I were to create them in EA Sports 14. What did you think about my ratings? What would you have done differently and would you include any other players in that 3-headed monster?

BRIAN: I can definitely see a couple different guys getting carries wedged into the mix. At the very least, I would have included Jamal Abdur-Rahman, who is likely to split time between slot receiver and running back like he did as a freshman. He has good speed and break tackle ability that makes him a home-run threat every time he gets the ball. Nova uses him like they used to use Matt Szczur, where he spent time in the backfield as well as lined up at receiver -- of course, Szczur also got snaps at QB, which won't be likely for Jamal.

I also think you may have underestimated John Robertson's speed. He's probably at least as fast as Austin Medley is, which is absolutely blazing-fast for a quarterback at any level. When Robertson gets on the move, he's usually going to break off a huge play if he gets through the first level of defense.

An offensive line that can buy Robertson some time in the pocket and push defenders around to create holes for the running game is going to be key for Villanova this fall. They've got a big and experienced group coming back, how do you think they will compare to some of the better lines in FCS and Division I generally?

CHRIS: Abdur-Rahman definitely came to mind, but I only saw 1-2 games during his freshman season and didn't have a good feel for his skillset, other than speed and shiftiness. As for the line, two things jump out at me. Both coming off a good season, either Kyle Wallace or Ross Hall is getting bumped to the second unit because of the return of All-American Dan Shirey, which speaks to the quality of depth at Andy Tallye's disposal. Second, any coach in the country would be thrilled of a line coming back that consists of 3 seniors and 2 juniors. And among them, they've all got at least one full season as a starter, so there's a ton of game experience as well.

The right side of the line, including Shirey at center, is massive. You could put Shirey, Bucci and Kowalski out there and it looks like a trio of FBS linemen. The left side, as with most lines, is a little on the lighter side and I'll be interested to see how Ross Hall handles the transition from center to guard since he'll now be relied on for more one-on-one responsibility than last season, but I love the makeup of the line and it should create huge holes for the running game.

We all know Robertson can run, but what do you expect from the passing game this season with the departure of Norman White?

BRIAN: Last season's passing game was anemic to say the least, but it wasn't really a focus for a team that was still working in a freshman quarterback, and where the offensive line didn't seem to be able to buy Robertson a ton of time to go through his reads. The coaching staff put a premium on the running game in that system and simplified the passing game for Robertson -- but that won't necessarily be the case this season.

On the plus side, I think the receiver corps are built to benefit Robertson this season. He'll have a lot of height on the outside with Joe Price, Clay Horne and Mike Burke all checking in over 6-2, and they've got some reliable hands as well. Inside, he'll have a tall and athletic Earnest Pettway at TE and Abdur-Rahman in the slot as well. I don't want to predict huge passing numbers, since it will likely remain a run-first team, but when they go to the air, it should be a pretty reliable option.

We know the Villanova offense returns almost everyone this season, so expectations are high, but what about the defense? Will they have enough firepower to keep opposing offenses out of the end zone?

CHRIS: The front 6 should be the strength of the team. Antoine Lewis is on the Buck Buchanan watch list for the nation's best defensive player, and I think the emergence of Pat Williams allowing him to play more on the edges this season should really help the run defense as that is 3 big players on the line. The linebackers should be a strength as well with Dillon Lucas and Joey Harmon returning on the outside, and I expect big things from Corey Majors, who has big shoes to fill with the graduation of Devon Bridges. I think Majors has the talent to get it done and having a talented defensive line in front of him should be a huge boost.

The secondary seems to be a bit more of an unknown heading into the season, what's your take?

BRIAN: Joe Sarnese and Craig James at safety and corner, respectively, are two budding stars for Villanova in the secondary, but losing a playmaker like Ronnie Akins will definitely hurt, and there is a serious question about who will nail down the other cornerback spot. Definitely worrisome, but the 'Cats play in a league where the best offenses seem to run well, so getting back to run-stopping is probably the key, and the secondary will be able to hang back in zone coverages pretty often.

That takes at least some pressure off of the secondary, where nobody is necessarily going to have to put their man on an island all game. My guess is that the secondary will be schemed up to ensure that they don't give up the big plays, but they'll bend enough to allow some short passes. When Villanova faces teams with more potent passing attacks, expect to see the defense give up yardage. If they play that scheme right, they'll face their share of red zone situations, but maybe get enough stops to keep opponent scores down.

Which players are absolutely necessary for Villanova to succeed this fall?

CHRIS: It goes without saying really, but John Robertson is the key on offense. We saw how poorly the Chris Polony experiment was, and if (God forbid) Robertson gets hurt, we're back to square one. The other thing nobody seems to be talking about - what if Robertson regresses? Seems like he can only get better, but last year was pretty spectacular and he didn't have any truly bad performances, which is very rare for a freshman QB.

On defense, I'm going back to Corey Majors. I have complete confidence in the defensive line, but I'd like to see Villanova with a playmaking LB. Majors had FBS offers coming out of high school and is capable of being a dominant force at this level. If he plays up to his talent level, the Villanova defense should have a stellar season.

Your thoughts on the schedule? That William & Mary through James Madison stretch looks brutal.

BRIAN: I feel like there is at least one brutal stretch of three games or more every season, so as tough as it may be, the brass ring isn't ever out-of-reach. Fordham is going to put up a fight in week two and Penn always throws the kitchen sink at Nova, so it really won't be easy, but those two are expected wins as are Maine at home and at Rhode Island.

Stony Brook lost Maysonette, but they're the kind of program that is reloading from the transfer market every season, and that makes them the tough early test for Nova. That William & Mary to JMU stretch is going to be one that gives the 'Cats a big challenge, so it will be interesting to see how they deal with it, especially the three away games at Towson, UNH and JMU, and all have been pretty tough venues to play at. Villanova struggled last year with Towson's big offensive line and JMU is always a contender.

What does Villanova absolutely need to do better than last year to be a contender?

CHRIS: We're talking national title contenders, I hope! Coming off a CAA title and bringing a lot of people back, I'd only like to see a couple of things fine-tuned. First, the run defense has to improve. 'Nova was gashed a couple of games last season, most notably Stony Brook and Towson as you pointed out. Championship teams at any level typically stifle the run pretty well. I think the team is well positioned to do just that with some of the changes on defense, but we won't know until the actual games begin. BC should be a good early indication even though they're FBS.

I'd also like to see a more consistent passing game develop. The run is the bread and butter, and should be, but the 2009 team that won it all was able to do both and it helped keep defenses off balance. Now, if we're running for 300 yards a game, we're probably winning, but there are going to be times when we can't lean on Monangai/Robertson on the ground and we'll need to air it out. That was an issue last year for Robertson.

What's your gut feeling on the 'Cats this year? Any titles? Any big individual honors?

BRIAN: Barring injuries, I'd have to think that this Villanova team should be right back in the mix for a CAA title again. They have a tough schedule ahead, but so does everyone else, so as long as they can keep up with the other top schools, it should be attainable. The Sports Network projected Villanova as the CAA's only top-10 FCS team preseason (though Towson is close behind) and they picked Villanova to win the league. I do think that some schools like Richmond and Stony Brook are potentially being underrated, but the overall consensus is that Nova will be very good and if the stars align, I could see they jetting off to Frisco in January, but a good playoff run seems a likely goal.

Last season, we saw John Robertson burst onto the scene, do you have any predictions for a breakout player this season?

CHRIS: Hopefully it's Jamal Abdur-Rahman. Villanova could use a homerun threat on offense, and JAR showed enough during his freshman season where it sounds like he is the most likely candidate. It will be interesting to see how a year away from competitive action affects his play. We know JayVaughn Pinkston went through some struggles on the basketball side before really turning it on in the 2nd half of the season. I would expect something similar from JAR.

On the defensive side, Joe Sarnese is really solid and should be the leader on the backend of the defense, but we need a playmaker to replace Ronnie Akins. I expect Sarnese to step into that role well and take a lot of responsibility onto his shoulders in a relatively inexperienced secondary.

Thanks for the time Brian - hopefully I'll see you and many more of the VU Hoops community at Boston College for the season opener!

The strange world of the Small Business Administration ? The ...

Dan Farber, professor of law | 7/15/13 |
Dan Farber

When you say ?small business,? most people probably imagine a mom-and-pop corner grocery.? Actually, the federal Small Business Administration?s concept of small goes well beyond that.? For instance, it includes a computer business that does up to $25 million per year in business. A convenience store can do $27 million and still be considered ?small,? while a grocery store can go up to $30 million. If you?re in parts of the financial sector, you can do $175 million in business a year and still be a ?small business.?

In many other areas, the size requirement is set in terms of numbers of employees?usually 500, but sometimes 1000 or more.? There are wonderfully detailed sub-categories such as ?Motor Vehicle Steering and Suspension Components (except Spring) Manufacturing? and the nostalgia-inducing ?Carbon Paper and Inked Ribbon Manufacturing.?? (Couldn?t find a heading for buggy-whip manufacturers, however.)? Anyway, each and every one of these businesses is, for some mysterious reason, entitled to the special care and solicitude of the U.S. government.

But the Small Business Administration seems remarkably attentive even to firms that exceed even this generous definition of small business. The Office of Advocacy also is willing to go the extra mile for big business groups like the American Chemistry Council.

It no longer seems to focus on the special needs of smaller (or maybe I should say ?less large?) businesses. Instead, studies by the Center for Progressive Reform and the Center for Effective?Government?shown, the SBA now acts as a mouthpiece for the business community as a whole, often echoing the views of Big Business. For instance, it pressured the EPA not to regulate arsenic, fine particles, and lead emissions from coal power plants. It has also opposed regulations of formaldehyde, styrene, and chromium, as well as arguing that EPA should not regulate greenhouse gases (apparently on grounds that the Supreme Court had already rejected in a previous case). It also shows up at meetings flanked by major corporations like ExxonMobil to argue in favor of watering down regulations.

Of course, the business community is entitled to advocate their viewpoints to regulators, and they spend many millions of dollars to do so.? But why should the U.S. government hire people to act as back-up lobbyists for the well-funded efforts of the Chamber of Commerce, major trade associations, and Fortune 500 companies?

Portland Timbers Beat LA Galaxy 2-1 on Last Gasp Goal

The Timbers win 2-1 over the LA Galaxy puts them back on track to contend for the Supporters Shield.

The Portland Timbers fought a pitched battle against the LA Galaxy tonight, winning 2-1 thanks to an Andrew Jean-Baptiste header at the death. In the final minute of stoppage time, second-half sub Jose Adolfo Valencia ran down a hoofed ball as it was rolling over the end line, winning an improbable corner off A.J. DeLaGarza. Diego Valeri's corner was floated into the box and out of the crush of bodies thrown at the ball, AJB get a head to it, burying the final chance of the game in the back of the net.

The lead up to the final moments was fraught with chances for both teams, and the scoring started early with a Galaxy goal in the seventeenth minute as Hector Jiminez found an unmarked Marcelo Sarvas in the Timbers box for a free header. Sarvas buried the chance and put the Timbers on the back foot from the start.

It was not long before the Timbers would get back in the game, however, as the Timbers made use of a quick free kick to open the Galaxy up only ten minutes later. As the Galaxy tried to compose themselves after giving up a free kick on their flank, Diego Valeri slipped a quick ball to Darlington Nagbe running into the box. As Carlo Cudicini rushed out to shut him down, Nagbe played the ball across the goal to a wide open Ryan Johnson who only had to tap the ball into an open net to tie the game.

In between the goals, the action was marked by physical play with referee Baldomero Toledo calling thirty fouls on the night and handing out seven yellow cards, of which six were for dissent. The Timbers and Galaxy each had their chances on the night as both sides amassed over 400 passes.

The win is a huge victory for the Timbers as they move back into second place in the west and put some space between themselves and the rapidly rising Galaxy. More importantly, however, the Timbers gutted out a win over strong opposition after faltering against the Columbus Crew last weekend.

How would you change Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Carbon?

DNP Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon review dark and angular meets thin and light

Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Carbon is such a beautiful piece of hardware that we're having trouble concentrating. With that carbon fiber chassis, the Ultrabook is thin, light and classily understated. Even packing Ivy Bridge internals, it still managed to crank out five hours of battery life and, aside from its slightly weak display, stands head and shoulders above other skinny carbon laptops we could mention. But what about you high-rollers who splashed out upwards of $1400 on one of these things? Here's the time for you to share your experiences and tell us what you would change.

CHICAGO, IL Baseball players undergoing ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) surgery are able to return to the same or higher level of competition for an extended period of time, according to research presented today at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's (AOSSM) Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL.

"Previous studies showed successful return to play after UCL surgery, but we were also able to evaluate each athlete's career longevity and reason for retirement," commented lead author, Daryl C. Osbahr, MD of MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. "These players typically returned to play within a year of surgery and averaged an additional 3.6 years of playing time, a significant amount considering the extensive nature of this surgery in a highly competitive group of athletes. They also typically did not retire from baseball secondary to continued elbow problems."

The study examined 256 patients, including high school, college and professional baseball players, and were contacted an average of 12.6 years after their UCL reconstruction. Approximately 83 percent of these athletes were able to return to the same or higher level of competition, with only 3 percent reporting persistent elbow pain and only 5 percent noting limitation of elbow function during day-to-day activities.

"UCL injuries used to be considered career-ending," Osbahr noted. "Now players are consistently able to return to play at a high level while also enjoying excellent long-term outcomes."

While approximately 243 (95%) of the athletes studied had retired by the minimum 10-year follow-up, 238 (98%) still participated in throwing at a recreational level with most reporting no elbow pain.

The research earned AOSSM's O'Donoghue Sports Injury Research award, given annually to the best overall paper that deals with clinical-based or human in-vivo research.

Chinese Q2 GDP Preview - Business Insider

Chinese economic data has disappointed markets in the past few months. Here's a look at April, and May.

China will release its Q2 GDP data at 10 p.m. ET. Economists polled by Bloomberg are looking for GDP to rise 7.5% year-over-year, and for real GDP to rise 1.7% quarter-over-quarter.

This isn't the only data out tonight though. We also have industrial production, fixed asset investment (FAI) and retail sales for June out at 10 p.m. ET.?

Economists polled by Bloomberg are looking for industrial production to rise 9.1% YoY, year-to-date FAI ex-rural to rise 20.2% YoY, and retail sales to rise 12.9% YoY.

We've already seen a slump in exports, driven by a government crackdown on speculative Forex inflows and a weak global economic environment. Producer prices were also negative for the 16th straight month highlighting the nation's excess capacity problems. The recent liquidity squeeze in China is also expected to weigh on economic growth.

Bank of America's Ting Lu however wrote that China benefits from the Li Keqiang put i.e. the Chinese premier will be unwilling to let growth slip below 7.5%.

Economists have however been lowering their GDP forecasts as this chart from Bloomberg BRIEF's Michael McDonough shows:

Box office: 'Despicable Me 2' holds top spot

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Universal's minions ran away with the box office for the second week in a row.

With $44.8 million in domestic ticket sales Friday through Sunday, the animated sequel "Despicable Me 2" outdid the debuts of the Adam Sandler comedy "Grown Ups 2" and director Guillermo del Toro's monsters-versus-robots action flick "Pacific Rim."

The weekend's No. 1 movie featuring Steve Carell as ex-supervillain Gru made another $55.5 million overseas. That brought its global two-week total to $472.4 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

"This has become the July film to beat right now," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box office tracking division of Hollywood.com. "There's something about the minions that audiences just love."

Sony was pleased with Sandler's second-best movie opening of his career with $42.5 million in sales in the U.S. and Canada (His best domestic opening was "The Longest Yard" from 2005 with $58.6 million over four days). Overseas, the comedy brought in $1.7 million.

The movie brings together former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal as a bumbling police officer with a host of comedy All-Stars including Chris Rock and David Spade playing awkward parents.

The third-place finish of "Pacific Rim," with $38.3 million in receipts, represented a disappointing start domestically for Warner Bros. and partner Legendary Entertainment. Figures released by the studio showed it doing better overseas.

The movie took in $53 million from 38 markets outside the U.S. and Canada, representing about half its overseas footprint. It has yet to open in China or Japan, the home of the movie's co-star, Rinko Kikuchi.

Warner Bros. said the debut of "Pacific Rim" in several countries such as Russia and South Korea was better than that other films that have gone on to gross more than $300 million internationally, like "Transformers 2" and "Prometheus."

The movie had an estimated production budget of $185 million, not including the millions spent on marketing, so there is still the opportunity for it to make its money back.

Fizziology, a company that tracks buzz on social networks like Twitter and Facebook, said that 82 percent of posts on "Pacific Rim" were positive ahead of the opening, with only 6 percent negative as some people drew negative comparisons to the "Power Rangers" or "Godzilla." The film draws heavily on Japan's "Kaiju" movie monster tradition.

Fizziology President Ben Carlson said the appeal of "Pacific Rim" to 3-D moviegoers and the fact it is one of the most-hyped films of the summer could help it with Asian audiences, he said.

"This movie's really pre-wired to do well in those territories," he said.

Disney's "The Lone Ranger," starring Johnny Depp as Tonto, took in $11.1 million domestically in its second week, falling into fifth place behind "The Heat" starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, which brought in another $14 million in its third week.

Stock market analysts predict Disney to book a big loss on the film.

The film was temporarily halted in July 2011 to rein in its budget, but production expenses alone are estimated to have exceeded $200 million. So far, it has pulled in just $119.1 million worldwide, roughly half of which is kept by theater owners. Eric Wold, an analyst with investment bank B. Riley & Co. pegged Disney's possible loss on the film at about $100 million.

    ___

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released on Monday.

    1. "Despicable Me 2," $44.8 million. ($55.5 million international).

    2. "Grown Ups 2," $42.5 million. ($1.7 million international).

    3. "Pacific Rim," $38.3 million. ($53 million international).

    4. "The Heat," $14 million. ($8.1 million international).

    5. "The Lone Ranger," $11.1 million. ($12.7 million international).

    6. "Monsters University,"$10.6 million. ($30.2 million international).

    7. "World War Z," $9.4 million. ($22.4 million international).

    8. "White House Down," $6.2 million. (41.8 million international).

    9. "Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain," $5 million.

    10. "Man of Steel," $4.8 million. ($13.3 million international).

    ___

Estimated weekend ticket sales at international theaters (excluding the U.S. and Canada) for films distributed overseas by Hollywood studios, according to Rentrak:

    1. "Despicable Me 2," $55.5 million.

    2. "Pacific Rim,"$53 million.

    3. "Monsters University," $30.2 million.

    4. "World War Z," $22.4 million.

    5. "After Earth," $13.7 million.

Florida jury in Zimmerman trial has question for judge about manslaughter charge

The Florida jury deciding the fate of George Zimmerman for killing unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin asked for clarification on Saturday on manslaughter, the less-serious charge he faces in the case that has sparked debate on race and guns.

    ?

The panel of six women, which has deliberated more than 12 hours over two days, could decide on manslaughter, second-degree murder or acquittal for Zimmerman, who says he shot the 17-year-old Martin in self-defense.

    ?

Zimmerman, 29, said Martin attacked him on the night of Feb. 26, 2012, in the central Florida town of Sanford.

    ?

Prosecutors contend Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch coordinator in his gated community, was a "wannabe cop" who tracked down the teenager and shot him without justification.

    ?

To convict Zimmerman of second-degree murder, which carries the possibility of a life prison sentence, the jury must find Zimmerman acted with ill will, spite or hatred. The option of manslaughter, which has a lesser burden of culpable negligence, carries a prison sentence of up to 30 years.

    ?

The jurors, who are sequestered, heard 12 days of testimony and two days of closing arguments before deliberating.

    ?

Although small compared with the protests that erupted after the killing last year, about 100 demonstrators braved the blistering Florida sun to gather outside the Seminole County courthouse as the deliberations proceeded.

    ?

Only a handful, including one brandishing a sign that read, "George You Got Hit, You Must Acquit," appeared to support Zimmerman.

    ?

Carrying placards reading: "Jail the Killer" and "Justice 4 Trayvon," many called for a murder conviction. Some wore T-shirts with an image of Zimmerman in the crosshairs of a gun, with the words "Yes Sir ... Creepy Ass Cracker" on the back.

    ?

"Creepy ass cracker" were the words Martin's friend Rachael Jeantel told the court he used to describe Zimmerman on a cell phone call moments before he was shot.

    ?

At the courthouse, Judge Debra Nelson said she would allow the jurors to set their own working hours. The panel worked through lunch on Saturday, returning only at about 6 p.m. (2200 GMT) to ask for the clarification on the manslaughter charge.

    ?

The saga began on the rainy February night when Zimmerman called police to report a suspicious person in his neighborhood. That was Martin, visiting the home of his father's fiancee.

    ?

In the fight that ensued, Zimmerman suffered several head injuries and he shot Martin once through the heart with a Kel Tec 9 mm pistol loaded with hollow-point bullets.

    ?

Police initially declined to arrest Zimmerman, believing his account of self-defense. That provoked demonstrations, which spread nationwide, accusing Zimmerman of racial profiling and demanding his arrest.

    ?

Zimmerman was arrested 45 days after the shooting, after the Sanford police chief stepped down and the governor appointed a special prosecutor who pressed second-degree murder charges.?? Reuters

Texas Repubs pass abortion bill, Dems vow fight

AUSTIN, Texas Republicans in the Texas Legislature passed an omnibus abortion bill that is one of the most restrictive in the nation, but Democrats vowed Saturday to fight both in the courts and the ballot box as they used the measure to rally their supporters.

More than 2,000 demonstrators filled the Capitol building in Austin to oppose the bill, and state troopers drug six out of the Senate chamber for trying to disrupt the debate. The Republican majority ultimately passed the bill unchanged just before midnight, with all but one Democrat voting against it.

"Today the Texas Legislature took its final step in our historic effort to protect life," said Gov. Rick Perry who will sign the bill into law in the next few days. "This legislation builds on the strong and unwavering commitment we have made to defend life and protect women's health."

Democrats, though, promised a fight in the courts.

"There will be a lawsuit. I promise you," Dallas Sen. Royce West said on the Senate floor, raising his right hand as if taking an oath.

Democrats offered 20 amendments to the bill, which will ban abortions after 20 weeks, require abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital and require all abortions take place in surgical centers. They ranged from exceptions for rape and incest to allowing doctors more leeway in prescribing abortion-inducing drugs. But Republicans would have none of it.

The bill is just one of many across the nation championed by anti-abortion groups set on a constitutional challenge to Roe vs Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision guaranteeing a woman's right to decide on an abortion before the fetus is viable outside the womb.

Texas falls under the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, which has shown a willingness to accept more stringent limits on abortions. Passing the law also pleases Christian conservatives who make up the majority of Republican primary voters.

But the measure has also sparked protests in Texas not seen in least 20 years, with thousands of abortion rights supporters flooding the Capitol to draw out normally boring committee hearings and disrupting key votes. Protesters finished a filibuster started by Democratic Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth by jeering for the last 15 minutes of the first special session, effectively killing the bill.

That's when Perry called lawmakers back for round two. But opponents said the fight is far from over and used the popular anger to register and organize Democratic voters.

"Let's make sure that tonight is not an ending point, it's a beginning point for our future, our collective futures, as we work to take this state back." Davis told 2,000 adoring supporters after the bill passed.

The Texas Republican Party, meanwhile, celebrated what they considered a major victory that makes Texas "a nationwide leader in pro-life legislation."

"As Democrats continue to talk about their dreams of turning Texas blue, passage of HB2 is proof that Texans are conservative and organized and we look forward to working with our amazing Republican leadership in the Texas Legislature as they finish the special session strong," a party statement said.

Friday's debate took place between a packed gallery of demonstrators, with anti-abortion activists wearing blue and abortion-rights supporters wearing orange. Security was tight, and state troopers reported confiscating bottles of urine and feces as they worked to prevent another attempt to stop the Republican majority from passing the proposal.

Those arrested or removed from the chamber included four women who tried to chain themselves to a railing in the gallery while singing, "All we are saying is give choice a chance." One of the women was successful in chaining herself, prompting a 10-minute recess.

Sen. Glen Hegar of Katy, the bill's Republican author, argued that all abortions, including those induced with medications, should take place in an ambulatory surgical center in case of complications.

Democrats pointed out that childbirth is more dangerous than an abortion and there have been no serious problems with women taking abortion drugs at home.

Cecile Richards, the daughter of former Gov. Anne Richards and president of Planned Parenthood, said Texas Republicans and abortion opponents won this political round - but it could cost them down the road.

"All they have done is built a committed group of people across this state who are outraged about the treatment of women and the lengths to which this Legislature will go to take women's health care away," she said.

The dedication of those activists will be tested during the 2014 elections. Democrats have not won a statewide seat in Texas since 1994, the longest such losing streak in the nation.
